These plant-based sneakers are a step towards biodegradable fashion

@flamingoslife

What do corn waste, bamboo, and natural rubber have in common? They’re some of the plant based and highly biodegradable materials Flamingos Life are using to create sneakers that leave a better environmental footprint.

Working with artisans in Spain and Portugal, Flamingos Life is a self-proclaimed project about plants that combines style and sustainability in signature kicks. There’s the Burela Slim which utilises apple waste from the beverage industry, the Saline which has an inner lining with recycled polyester, and the Retros 86s which salvage plastic litter. Not only do they reduce carbon emissions, but each new collection is one step closer to their ultimate goal: manufacturing completely biodegradable sneakers.

Flamingos Life also supports an array of community projects by donating a portion of every purchase, from planting 263,783 trees in Madagascar and Mozambique with Eden Reforestation Projects to removing 25,596 kilograms of plastic from the ocean with Waste Free Oceans. They’ve even given 1,500 people in remote areas of Uganda access to clean water by building three wells in partnership with Agua ONG (source here).

Moving towards a greener future? Flamingos Life is definitely on the right foot.

Editor’s Note: I own Flamingos Life’s Leonardo 02 in Forest and can confirm they are comfy, versatile, and cool as hell.
