These pantry goods are putting native ingredients in Australian kitchens

While coming together over a meal is a universal experience, Mabu Mabu is the Torres Strait-owned business using it as an opportunity to share the culture, flavour and possibilities of native ingredients.
Founded by the incredible Nornie Bero, ‘mabu mabu’ is a saying that means ‘help yourself’ and is the driving force behind the vibrant range of handmade small-batch pantry items called Kara Meta (which translates to ‘my home’ in the language of the Meriam people of Mer Island). From salt bush to wattleseed and strawberry gum, discover a versatile range of spices alongside herbal teas, sauces, jams, and chilli pastes. You can also get your hands on the Mabu Mabu cookbook which shares delicious ways to incorporate native flavours in everyday cooking.
Sourcing from First Nations, queer-led, women-led and environmentally conscious producers wherever possible, you can shop the range online or at their Naarm/Melbourne restaurant, Big Esso. Prefer to enjoy your food outside of the kitchen? Grab a seat at one of Big Esso’s communal tables and order up from the seasonal menu of Indigenous fare!
